Reading through tears

Since 2000 a groundswell of scientific data has demonstrated that infant teaching methods, based on guessing words from pictures and from the meaning of surrounding words, is failing large numbers of infants. 'Reading Through Tears' takes the reader through a series of case histories to hammer home the underlying flaws in such practices. The conclusions are supported by the detailed analysis of thousands of children and an introduction to VAS Theory which explains why reading failure was inevitable.

'Reading Through Tears' was not written with the benefits of hindsight following the findings of the public inquiries in the USA, Britain and Australia. The authors published their first papers warning about 'The Hole in Whole Language' way back in 1988. They don't condemn Whole Language, they simply demonstrate the scientific reasons why a phonics-first emphasis is necessary in infant grades and the dangers and consequences of a 'Teach Everything' approach.
